Default Mesmer ?

My Mesmer & I are really struggling in pre searing. Level 5 and having a real problem killing monsters. We have had to get real creative and run monsters by some of the NPCs to kill them. Do a lot of retreating and quick turns to fight.
Tell me please. How does a Mesmer go about killing any monsters & getting ahead. I hate to think about what is going to happen to me post searing.

P.S. I have not selected a second profession yet.

Thanks for your replies.

I have a lv 20 Mesmer, and I can give you some suggestions in pre-searing.

You can use "Empathy" on the enemies. This will help you do some damage. Also use "Conjure Phantasm" and boost your illusion magic to help make this skill stronger. When you life is at 50%, right away cast "Ether Feast", to help you recover some life.

Mesmers are good later on. You'll get skills such as Chaos Storm that does area damage. If you boost domination magic to 12, this skill can do 130 damage if you have say 5 enemies all clumped together, cast chaos storm on them, and it will do 130 damage to EACH enemy. Another good mesmer skill is Backfire. You can do tons of damage to a spell caster enemy.

I just started a Mesmer also and got absolutely slaughtered when I tried to do the Warrior secondary profession quest. I was only level 1 or 2 then though.
Mesmers are generally considered to be a support class, and that's fine most of the time since most of the game is played in teams, but in pre-searing it can make it a little tough. I found that if you could attract the attention of just one monster at a time and cast the spell that slows them down adn then the one that drains their life it worked okay.
